Here's an example breakdown

Reward sent back: a place for socks (6)

  1. definition

    “a place for socks” defines the answer, the same way any crossword would. The (6) counts its letters.

  2. indicator

    “sent back” is an instruction. It tells you to read something backwards.

  3. wordplay

    “Reward” is the thing to reverse. R-E-W-A-R-D backwards is D-R-A-W-E-R, a drawer, which is where the socks go.

Working out which half is which is its own skill which comes from practice.
